ABOUT ME
Welcome to the ACME Film Company. I'm based in Auckland, and have over 25 years directing experience across a huge range of projects. All formats are covered.. Film (YES FILM!!) 4K, HD, Digital Content.. TVCs, TV shows, corporate and live events.
My directing also extends to multi-camera and live directing in a control room and OB environment, thanks to my background in broadcast, where I cut my teeth as a floor manager/1st AD in Christchurch in the days of “What Now?” and “Son Of A Gun”, when ChCh TVNZ was a thriving TV station of over 220 full time staff. Thanks to that amazing grounding I developed a love of directing in that environment.
Comedy, drama, narrative, the ridiculous, the meaningful, the meaningless.. add a little bit of insanity and humanity to it and you are there!
Style AND content are king. Crazy and quirky can often help. My UE school chemistry report said “Robert could excel at this subject if only he applied himself better. His real area of expertise appears to be that of late night television”. THAT is a true story and to me, says it all.
I love working with both actors and untrained talent, honing all manner of performances. I’ve directed a huge number of food shoots, again TVCs and TV shows. The 8 episode series “Surfing The Menu” for ABC Australia, where we spent 8 weeks travelling around New Zealand, is a real highlight. Other material includes campaigns for Dilmah Tea on location in Sri Lanka, launching Food In A Minute with Allyson Gofton and Mike O'Sullivan, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, KFC, Sony, Dairy NZ, Electricity Commission, TSB Bank, SmartShopper for Progressive Enterprises, amongst many others.
The now legendary “30 Seconds” is part of Kiwi folklore, and when it's goes to air, always gets people talking. I do like a laugh.. I strive to always be a director that is strong on performance while still maintaining a definite visual style.
